namaste and shanti?

I thought I knew what namaste meant...after reading some recent posts on other tribes, I began to think maybe I didn't. And I'm not sure what shanti means...have an idea, but thats it.

can anyone clear up the maenings for me? or do you know anyone who can?

    This may not be exact, but I understand "namaste" to mean something like: "The divine essence in me honors the divine essence in you".

      I think you are right on Shanti meaning peace, my friend has a prayer he recites in Sanskrit and repeats in english and in the prayer Shanti is followed by peace.

      I also found this online but do not know how much water it holds.

      " In Sanskrit "Namas" means, "bow, obeisance, reverential salutation." It comes from the root Nam, which carries meanings of bending, bowing, humbly submitting and becoming silent.
